Mental Toughness for Injured Athletes: How to Regain Confidence and Get Back to Competition
If you've ever been injured, you know that sometimes your body is healed before your confidence is. Your brain needs its own “physical therapy” to get back to the confidence and composure you felt before you got injured. The Mental Toughness for Injured Athletes program will provide you with the tools you need to regain your confidence and get back to the athlete you were (and even better than you were!) before your injury.
Once you’ve gone through this program you will be familiar with the ins-and-outs of the injury process. You’ll better understand the impact that stress has on your injury and your recovery, learn how to navigate the specific issues that come up during the rehabilitation process and you’ll gain the resilience you need to stay positive throughout this process. But best of all, you’ll have access to the mental skills training tools you need to regain your confidence in yourself and get back to your sport.
Lesson 1: Injury Sucks
How are you handling the emotional roller coaster?
The road to recovery involves first acknowledging the difficult, shifting, and sometimes contradictory emotions triggered when you get hurt. This lesson identifies the factors that influence your injury experience and explains how to successfully navigate the emotional roller coaster you’re now riding.
Lesson 2: Stress & Recovery
Are you deliberately working on managing your stress?
Stress has a real, physiological impact on the healing process and your risk of re-injury. This lesson explains the role of stress during injury and recovery and offers tips on how to eliminate stressors when you can and manage your response when you can’t.
Lesson 3: Rehabilitation
Do you have the support you need?
Isolation, pain, navigating the logistics of rehab and relationships with health care providers—injury brings a slew of specific challenges. You’ll learn how to address them, including how to build a support system that gives you the assistance you need, when you need it.
Lesson 4: Staying Positive
Can you persevere and remain resilient?
Positive thoughts alone can’t heal your body. But resilience and maintaining an optimistic attitude gives you the best chance of emerging from injury stronger. In this lesson you’ll learn about specific tools and techniques to lift your mood and your confidence even as you work though the obstacles before you.
Lesson 5: Return to Sport
Are you ready to get back to the sport that you love?
Congratulations, you’ve been cleared to compete again! You’ve overcome many huge hurdles, but you’re not quite done yet—ongoing patience and diligence will aid your re-entry. In this final lesson, you will learn how to build your confidence as you get ready to return to your sport and go over some of the red flags to watch out for along the way.
